Conowingo Dam, MD

On a VERY cold April morning I made my way to Conowingo Dam and captured this stitched image with Phantom 4. Due to time restrictions of this particular morning (kids have to go to school) I was only able to have the drone in the air for about 10 minutes. Actually staying for longer would be difficult as it was freezing anyway. Flying while wearing gloves is difficult and dangerous so I don’t do it (wearing thin gloves might be a solution but then those don’t really keep your hands warm). After the short flight I was ready to get back into the heated car interior and restore circulation to my hands.

As far as this location goes it is definitely an attractive aerial photography target but I have yet to figure out where to take off from. This flight started at the Conowingo Dam Visitor Center and while it’s possible to fly from there it’s not the ultimate location. Next time I am at the Dam I will search for another spot that might provide better view of the drone while in flight and a chance to capture even better angle of the Dam. If you have any tips about the Dam area please leave a comment!

April 9, 2016 update: the following image was captured at sunset during our second visit and drive through the dam. To view it full screen right click it (or double finger tap on mac) and select “open image in new tab”. Enjoy!

You can no longer fly drones legally at Conowingo dam. Due to high population of birds nesting it is not good for the wildlife. The have signs posted there now. Still a great local for conventional cameras!
